Cut & Sew Applique
Cut & Sew is a technique that involves the stitching of pieces of fabric onto a larger pieces of material to make a pattern or design. This technique is very common in the sporting apparel industry.
What we mean by Cut & Sew is that we cut athletic tackle twill materials in accordance with the design specifications and then reassemble those pieces of athletic tackle twill onto the garment by hand sewing or embroidering them to complete the design.
Most common uses of cut and sew techniques are used when making detailed jersey crests or when sewing or embroidering multi-color, multi-layer athletic tackle twill player names and numbers.
We start with adhesive backed athletic tackle twill, If more than one layer of twill is required, we heat press the layers together and then cut the twill to the design shape using Laser Cutters. The Laser Cutter burns the edge of the twill fabric so that it won't fray after being applied to the garment while being worn during games.
Once the twill layers are cut, we weed out the unnecessary twill (waste). Then, we heat apply the single or multi-layer twill design onto the garment and press it into place to hold it during the sewing phase. While most cut and sew twill designs are embroidered onto the garment, we still do some hand sewing. This is based on the amount of detail in the design or sometimes which department is available to complete the job so that it can be delivered on time.
